CBCT Referral

CBCT Referral

We are now offering CBCT at our sister clinic Dentistry by The Bay!

CBCT stands for "Cone Beam Computed Tomography." It is a specialized medical imaging technique that provides detailed three-dimensional images of various structures within the body, including the head, neck, and oral structures.

CBCT technology is commonly used in dentistry, particularly in oral and maxillofacial imaging, to capture high-resolution images of the teeth, jaws, and surrounding tissues.

Here's how CBCT works:

  1. Cone Beam Source: CBCT uses a cone-shaped X-ray beam, which is different from the fan-shaped X-ray beam used in traditional medical CT scans.
  2. Detector: The X-ray detector, positioned opposite the X-ray source, captures the X-rays that pass through the patient's body. The detector rotates around the patient as the X-ray source rotates in the opposite direction.
  3. Image Reconstruction: The captured X-ray data is processed by a computer to reconstruct three-dimensional images of the area being scanned. These images provide detailed cross-sectional views that allow for a thorough assessment of the anatomical structures.

CBCT has several applications in dentistry:

  1. Dental Implant Planning: CBCT images can help dentists visualize the bone structure and determine the optimal placement for dental implants.
  2. Orthodontic Treatment Planning: CBCT scans provide detailed information about tooth position, root orientation, and jaw development, aiding orthodontists in treatment planning.
  3. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: CBCT is valuable for assessing impacted teeth, diagnosing pathologies, and planning surgical procedures involving the jaws and facial structures.
  4. Endodontics: CBCT can be used to diagnose and plan treatment for complex root canal cases by providing detailed views of tooth anatomy.
  5. Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Evaluation: CBCT can help assess the TMJ and surrounding structures for conditions such as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).
  6. Diagnosis of Pathologies: CBCT scans can aid in detecting various oral and maxillofacial pathologies, such as cysts, tumors, and infections.

CBCT imaging has the advantage of providing high-quality images with a relatively low dose of radiation compared to traditional CT scans. However, like any medical imaging technique, the benefits must be weighed against the potential risks, and CBCT should only be used when deemed necessary by a qualified healthcare professional.

If your dentist or oral healthcare provider recommends a CBCT scan as part of your treatment or diagnosis, they will discuss the reasons for the scan, its benefits, and any potential risks. Contact us today for a CBCT referral today!
